Clear Skies Ahead: Making the Most of September in the Okanagan
After a Challenging August, There’s Still Plenty of Okanagan Summer Left
August wasn’t quite the summer month many of us had hoped for in the Okanagan.
Wildfires and periods of heavy smoke affected communities throughout the region, disrupted travel plans, and kept many of us indoors on days we would normally have spent at the beach, on the lake, or exploring the outdoors.
For residents, visitors, tourism businesses, and everyone affected more directly by the fires, it was a difficult stretch.
But September has arrived, the skies have cleared, and the Okanagan is looking beautiful again.
After losing some valuable summer days in August, we’re ready to make up for lost time. And if you’ve been waiting to get outside, there’s still plenty of opportunity to enjoy everything the Okanagan has to offer.
September Might Be One of the Best Times to Get on the Lake
July and August usually get all the attention, but September can be an incredible time to experience Okanagan Lake.
The busiest part of the tourist season begins to wind down, which means less traffic on the water, quieter beaches, and a little more room to explore.
The days can still be warm and sunny, and the lake has had an entire summer to warm up. That makes September perfect for squeezing in another boat day, heading out on a Sea-Doo, or simply finding a quiet spot to relax on the water.
If your August lake plans were cancelled or postponed because of smoke, now is a great time to try again.
Take the Boat Out One More Time
There’s something different about boating in September.
Okanagan Lake becomes noticeably quieter once the peak summer crowds disappear. Instead of navigating a busy lake on a Saturday afternoon, you can cruise the shoreline, stop for a swim, or simply enjoy the mountain views at a much more relaxed pace.
Our Kelowna boat rentals include everything from sporty cruisers and wake tower boats to large pontoon boats for groups.
Bring some friends, pack a lunch, and reclaim one of those summer days you missed in August.
September lake days still count.
Explore Okanagan Lake on a Jet Ski or Sea-Doo
If relaxing isn't exactly what you had in mind, there’s still time for some speed.
A Kelowna jet ski rental is one of the best ways to cover a lot of Okanagan Lake in a relatively short amount of time. You can explore the Kelowna waterfront, head toward West Kelowna, discover different beaches, or simply enjoy the freedom of being out on the open water.
September also means fewer boats and personal watercraft competing for space, which can make exploring the lake even more enjoyable.
If riding a Sea-Doo was on your summer list and August got in the way, you haven't missed your chance.
Slow Things Down With a Paddle
Not every September adventure needs an engine.
Clear mornings and quieter water make this a fantastic time of year for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding in Kelowna.
Launch from downtown and explore the shoreline at your own pace. Paddleboarding and kayaking give you time to appreciate the smaller things you sometimes miss from a boat, from waterfront parks and beaches to the views back toward downtown Kelowna.
For something a little different, our HydroBikes offer another easygoing way to get out on the water and are used within the protected downtown
lagoon.
Get Out and Explore on Two Wheels
September isn't only about the lake.
Slightly cooler temperatures can make it one of the nicest months of the year for cycling around Kelowna.
Grab one of our Kelowna bike rentals and explore the waterfront, downtown paths, and surrounding neighbourhoods, or take an e-bike if you'd like a little help covering more distance.
September is also a beautiful time to experience Myra Canyon and the Kettle Valley Rail Trail. The historic trestles, tunnels, mountain scenery, and views across the valley make it one of those quintessential Okanagan experiences that's easy to put off during the hottest part of summer.
If August kept you inside, September gives you a second chance.
Take a Tour and Rediscover the Okanagan
Sometimes living here means forgetting just how much there is to see.
A scenic boat tour offers a completely different view of Kelowna from the water, while our Myra Canyon bike tours let you explore one of the most famous sections of the KVR without worrying about transportation or equipment.
And with Lakefront Sports now operating in Osoyoos, there are even more reasons for a September road trip south.
Spend some time on Osoyoos Lake, experience our new Wine Boat Tour, or see the South Okanagan from an entirely different perspective with one of our scenic floatplane experiences in partnership with Air Hart Aviation.
September doesn't have to be about winding down. It can be about finally doing the things you didn't get a chance to do earlier in the summer.
Summer Isn't Over Yet
After a challenging August, seeing blue skies over the Okanagan again feels especially good.
September may mark the beginning of fall on the calendar, but around here, there are still lake days to enjoy, trails to ride, places to explore, and adventures waiting outside.
So if you had to cancel plans, stayed inside because of the smoke, or simply didn't get enough Okanagan summer this year, don't pack everything away just yet.
We've got some catching up to do.
